Herbert L. Tatroe, age 97, of Braidwood, IL passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at his home, surrounded by those who loved him. He was born May 14, 1924 in Joliet, IL to the late George and Elsie (nee Lembke) Tatroe. Herb served in the United States Marine Corps from 1943-1945 in the Pacific Theater of World War II in the Fifth Division. He then married June Bertucci on June 26, 1948 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rockdale, IL. He was very proud of serving others all his life. Herb was the former Assistant Band Director for Lockport Township High School, where he led the marching band to win first place in the nation, earning the Music Man award in 1962. He was also the band director at Rockdale Jr. High School, eventually retiring from the Rockdale Grade School. Herb was a part-time police officer in the early 1950s; he also worked part-time for the Street Department in Rock-dale; was a former bus driver for Joliet Township High School; worked at Wedge-wood Golf Course in Plain-field; and served as Rockdale Village Trustee. Herb also spent his time serving for the Rockdale Fire Department as a Fireman, Fire Protection District Trustee, and was the Fire Chief for over 20 years. In his limited free time, he loved to be with his family, watching his grandchildren grow. Occasionally you could find Herbie on the golf course. Although he enjoyed golf, he was passionate about looking for the lost golf balls. Surviving are four children: Carol (Hector) Cerrillo, Ernest “Butch” (Felicia) Tatroe, Linda (Jeff Pearson) Adams, and Charlie (Mary) Tatroe; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Tatroe; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, June Tatroe on November 22, 2008; one brother, George (Pat) Tatroe; and one sister, Evelyn Ahlvin. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private services will be held. Inurnment with military honors will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be directed to Lightways Hospice, the former Joliet Area Community Hospice.
