Prairie Creek Public Library offers slate of events
Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight has planned several events to keep members of our community busy, entertained, and learning. These events are free and open to the public. However, due to limited space, registration is required. Annette Bochenek presents Hedy Lamarr will be at 6 pm Monday, Aug. 3. Annette presented a program on “The Wizard of Oz” last year, and now she’s back to discuss Hedy Lamarr. Lamarr was not only one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but she was an inventor who developed the concepts behind technologies we use today, like Bluetooth.
Craft Night for adults and teens will meet at 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 6, to create a hanging fairy garden, perfect as an inside or outside decoration.
Euchre Tournament will begin at 6 pm Monday, Aug. 10. This will be a fun night of snacks and cards for players of any skill level. Beginners are welcome. No money is involved.
Lost Chicago Department Stores will be presented by historian Leslie Goddard at 6 pm Wednesday, Aug. 12. Within thirty years of the Great Chicago Fire, the revitalized city was boasting some of America’s grandest department stores. The retail corridor on State Street was a crowded canyon of innovation and inventory where you could buy anything from a paper clip to an airplane. Revisit a time when a trip downtown meant dressing up for lunch at Marshall Field’s Walnut Room, strolling the aisles of Sears for Craftsman tools or redeeming S&H Green Stamps at Wieboldt’s. Whether your family favored The Fair, Carson Pirie Scott, Montgomery Ward, or Goldblatt’s, you were guaranteed stunning architectural design, attentive customer service and eye-popping holiday window displays. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, advertisements, catalogue images and postcards, Leslie Goddard’s narrative brings to life the Windy City’s fabulous retail past.
True Crime Discussion Group will meet at 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 13, to discuss the McDonald’s Monopoly Game Fraud. In the 1990s, McDonald’s launched its very successful Monopoly game promotion, but the game was rigged for over a decade. Group members research independently and share thoughts at the meeting.
On Monday, Aug. 17, the library will launch a new Fascinating People lecture series. The first lecture will begin at 6 pm and will focus on The Kennedy Heirs. Learn about the generation that came after JFK’s and the struggles and expectations they faced belonging to a political dynasty.
Senior Social returns at 1 pm Wednesday, Aug. 19. Anyone age 50 and older are invited to join this monthly event. This month, the group will enjoy treats while playing Name that Tune. The tunes will be songs that were popular in the 60s and 70s.
Hillbilly Bingo will be at 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 20. This is a fun twist on Bingo. The evening will include a few rounds of regular Bingo as well.
Shelf Indulgence Book Discussion Group will meet at 10 am Tuesday, Aug. 25, to discuss “Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall. This group is open to all adults.
Fascinating People: Gene Roddenberry’s Trek through Life will be presented at 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 27. Learn about the life and career of the man who created Star Trek.
Every Wednesday, Toddler Time will be offered for children aged 0-4 and their caregivers. This program includes stories, crafts, and activities.
Stayin’ Fit and Active morning workouts will continue at 8 am each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The class offers chair or gentle exercises, focusing on chair yoga, core strengthening and balance.
In June and July, the library will offer Program Punch Cards to adults and teens. Patrons will receive a punch for each program attended. Every completed card with 10 punches will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card from the winner’s choice of a local business.
