Dwight Police Department Receives Universal Pet Microchip Reader from Subies of the Corn

DWIGHT, IL – The Dwight Police Department was one of three Illinois law enforcement agencies to receive a universal pet microchip reader from Subies of the Corn NFP during a charitable cruise along Historic Route 66 on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The donations, made in honor of Subaru Loves Pets®, are designed to help officers reunite lost pets with their families more quickly.
In addition to Dwight, the Braidwood and Elwood Police Departments also received universal microchip readers as part of the initiative, expanding the number of Illinois law enforcement agencies equipped with the technology to help return lost pets to their owners.
The handheld readers allow officers to quickly scan lost pets and retrieve their microchip identification number, even during weekends, holidays, and after normal veterinary business hours when veterinary clinics may be closed. Once the microchip number is obtained, officers can contact the pet’s microchip registry to identify and notify the owner, improving the chances of a safe and timely reunion.
“Getting lost pets back to their families as quickly as possible is incredibly important,” said J. Mykel Hill, President of Subies of the Corn. “We’re proud to partner with local law enforcement by providing tools that can make a real difference when every minute counts. We appreciate the Dwight Police Department’s commitment to serving the community and are honored to support their efforts.”
The donation comes at a critical time as Independence Day celebrations approach. While fireworks are a highlight for many families, they are one of the leading causes of pets becoming frightened and escaping from their homes. By equipping local police departments with universal microchip readers, Subies of the Corn is helping ensure officers have the resources needed to identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners during one of the busiest times of the year for animal shelters and first responders.
This marks the second consecutive year Subies of the Corn has provided universal pet microchip readers to local law enforcement agencies. In 2025, the organization donated readers to the Coal City and Wilmington Police Departments. With this year’s donations to the Elwood, Braidwood, and Dwight Police Departments, five Illinois police agencies are now equipped with these valuable tools to help reunite lost pets with their families. Subies of the Corn plans to continue expanding the program by partnering with additional law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois.
The microchip reader donation is part of Subaru Loves Pets®, a nationwide initiative that helps improve the lives of animals by supporting pet adoption, animal welfare organizations, and efforts that keep pets safe and with the families who love them.526 W. Oak St., Coal City, IL 60416
