Summer fun continues at Prairie Creek Public Library
Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight has planned several events in July to keep members of our community busy, entertained, and learning. These events are free and open to the public. However, due to limited space, registration is required. Puzzle Hunt for Kids is open to all grade school kids and will start at 11 am Monday, July 6. Pieces to two puzzles will be hidden throughout the library. Children will have to find the pieces and then complete the puzzles.
Uno Tournament for grades 4 through adult will be held at 2 pm Monday, July 6. Snacks will be available during play.
Exploring Neurodiversity will be at 6 pm Monday, July 6. This was rescheduled from an earlier date due to weather. Today’s education system recognizes neurodiversity in students. However, many adults grew up in an era that did not often diagnose ADHD, people on the spectrum, or various forms of OCD. Learn about types of neurodiversity and what can be done to best accommodate them.
STEM Part 2 for grade school students will be at 11 am Tuesday, July 7. Children will participate in a variety of STEM activities and experiments.
American Made Series: Levi Strauss & Co. and Calvin Klein Inc. will take place at 6 pm Tuesday, July 7. The latest installment in this series will examine these two companies and their different approach to blue jeans.
Jumping Spiders Craft for age 4-5th grade will be at 2 pm Wednesday, July 8. Children will make their own spider that will jump up when pushed down.
Chef Susan presents Classic American Summer Desserts at 6 pm Wednesday, July 8. There are just a few spaces left in this popular program. Chef Susan will demonstrate how to make some desserts and then give everyone a chance to try them.
Paint a Wooden Baseball or Softball will be at 10:30 am Thursday, July 9. This program has very limited space available.
True Crime Club will meet at 6 pm Thursday, July 9, in the library. The group will discuss Dean Corll (aka the Candy Man) and Elmer Wayne Henley, Jr. This group is open to any adult or teen who would like to come. Participants research on their own and bring their findings and opinions to the group.
Play-Doh Playdates for ages 2-6 will meet from 2-3 pm Friday, July 10. The library will provide all Play-Doh and tools, including some new toys.
Game Show Night will meet at 6 pm Friday, July 10, and is open to all teens and adults. Attendees may choose to participate or observe. We will draw names to see who plays which popular game show games like Wheel of Fortune, Name that Tune, Let’s Make a Deal, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Music & Motion for ages 2-6 will be at 2 pm Monday, July 13. This is a time of music, dancing, and parachute play.
Bingo for All will be held at 6 pm Monday, July 13. The game will use a variety of card themes, including cartoons, book characters, and music.
Wheel of Fortune for Kids will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 14. This is open to all grade school students.
Senior Social will meet at 1 pm Wednesday, July 15. This group is open to all adults age 50 and older. This month, the group will play card games while drinking root beer or Coke floats.
Chicago’s Baseball Rivalry: Cubs vs. White Sox will be at 6 pm Wednesday, July 15. Baseball historian and DTHS alum Bill Pearch will focus on the rivalry between the two Chicago teams and point out some connections to our area.
All About Teddy will be at 10:30 am Thursday, July 16. Children will listen to a story about Theodore Roosevelt and the origin of the teddy bear. Then they will get to stuff their own bear to take home with them.
The History of James Taylor + Carly Simon will begin at 6 pm Thursday, July 16. Using performance and interview clips, music historian Gary Wenstrup will trace the arc of the careers of this power couple of singer-songwriters from the early 1970s.
Mario Kart Tournament will be held at 10:30 am Friday, July 17. This event is open to all ages.
Dance Class Date Night will be held at 6 pm Friday, July 17. Young Dance will return to give a dance class, this time for the waltz. The instructor will be giving away a $50 gift card to 343 Firehouse Grill to one lucky dancer. Don’t have a partner? Come anyway and be paired up with one.
Puzzle Race will be held at 10 am Saturday, July 18. This event is open to all ages. Friends and family can team up or play alone to compete to finish a 300-piece puzzle first. Teams may have 1 to 4 people.
Great Homes of Chicago will be at 3 pm Sunday, July 19. The Windy City has several tourist attractions, but beyond those, historic houses offer incredible insight into American architecture, history, and culture. From a Gilded Age mansion clad in rare types of marble to a hulky stone home with connections to modern forensics, Chicago has some great homes that speaker Paul Mann will help you discover.
Doorhanger Craft will be at 10:30 am Monday, July 20. Kids can have fun decorating their craft with stickers and markers.
The Life and Art of Georgia O’Keeffe will be presented at 6 pm Monday, July 20. This lecture will cover one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, renowned for her contribution to modern art. Patrons will learn about her life, her art, and what made her art so special.
Farmer George Plants a Nation will be at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 21. The Livingston County Farm Bureau will present this program for grade schoolers and up about our first president, who was also a farmer, an engineer, an avid gardener, and an animal breeder.
Every Wednesday, Toddler Time will be offered for children aged 0-4 and their caregivers. This program includes stories, crafts, and activities.
Stayin’ Fit and Active morning workouts will continue at 8 am each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The class offers chair or gentle exercises, focusing on chair yoga, core strengthening and balance.
In June and July, the library will offer Program Punch Cards to adults and teens. Patrons will receive a punch for each program attended. Every completed card with 10 punches will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card from the winner’s choice of a local business.
