Dwight’s library hosts several upcoming events

Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight will host a number of upcoming events. These events are free and open to the public. However, due to limited space, registration is required. American Artist Andy Warhol will be presented at 6 pm Thursday, April 23. Guests will learn about the life and art of Warhol, a successful magazine and ad illustrator who became a leading artist of the 1960s Pop art movement.

At 6 pm Monday, April 27, the library will have an Iced Tea Tasting. This is open to teens and adults, and we will bring a variety of iced tea flavors for taste testing.

Shelf Indulgence Book Discussion will meet at 10 am Tuesday, April 28. All adults are welcome to join. This month’s book is “Find You First” by Linwood Barclay. Copies of the book are available at the main circulation desk.

The library will introduce its new American Made Series at 6 pm Thursday, April 30, with Coke and Pepsi. This series will look at the stories of some American-made products and companies. This installment will present the origins of Coke and Pepsi, who created them, and how they stayed on top. We will have Coke and Pepsi products to try during the program.

Floral Arranging will be offered at 6 pm Monday, May 4. Each participant will take home a small finished project.

At 6 pm Tuesday, May 5, the library will host a Euchre Tournament. No money is involved, but there will be a prize for the winner. All skill levels are welcome, and there is no need to bring a partner. We also will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with snacks like chips and salsa.

Young Dance of Bloomington will be at the library for a class from 6-6:45 pm Thursday, May 6, for a beginner dance class of East Coast Swing. Teens and adults are invited to learn. No partner is needed. Please arrive beginning at 5:45 pm as class will start promptly at 6.

Betty Crocker and the Cookbook that Changed How America Cooks will be presented by historian Leslie Goddard at 6 pm Monday, May 11. When Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book hit shelves in 1950, its sales soon rivaled that of The Bible. This nostalgia-packed illustrated lecture will explore the history of Betty Crocker, how she first rose to fame in 1921, and why her cookbook has endured.

The next Senior Social – Scattergories and Sundaes will be at 1 pm Wednesday, May 13. Seniors will play a staff-led game of Scattergories. The library will provide ice cream and sundae toppings.

Great American Mysteries Part 1 will be presented at 6 pm Wednesday, May 13. This first installment will cover the lost colony of Roanoke, Lizzie Borden, the Sodder children, the disappearance of Marjorie West, the Alcatraz escape, Mr. Whatsit, the Zodiac Killer, Roswell, and the Springfield Three.

The next True Crime Discussion will be at 6 pm Thursday, May 14. Participants will research on their own and bring their findings and theories to the group to discuss. This month, the group will focus on the Miranda case. In the case that sparked the Miranda Rights, Ernesto Miranda confessed to and was convicted of kidnapping and raping a young woman walking home from work. The conviction was overturned because police did not inform him of his right to remain silent.

At 10:30 am Saturday, May 16, the library will host a Community Craft. All ages are welcome to join us as we paint and create rock flowers, turtles, butterflies, dragonflies, and more. These creations will go along our landscaping outside to make our library fun, colorful, and inviting.

Every Wednesday, Toddler Time will be offered for children aged 0-4 and their caregivers. This program includes stories, crafts, and activities.

Beginning Monday, April 27, Stayin’ Fit and Active morning workouts will continue at 8 am each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The class offers chair or gentle exercises, focusing on chair yoga, core strengthening and balance.
