September 11  – Dwight Trojans Defeat Oakwood 22 -14

Dwight leaned on a punishing ground game and timely fourth-down execution to secure a hard-fought 22-14 victory over the Oakwood Comets from Vermilion County. 

Controlling the clock from the second quarter onward, the Trojans outgained the Comets 350 to 270 in total yardage while running 69 plays to Oakwood’s 41.

Oakwood landed the opening punch in the first quarter when running back Kyler Johnson broke away for a 15-yard touchdown run, giving the Comets a 7-0 advantage following the extra point. Johnson proved dangerous every time he touched the ball, racking up a game-high 212 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Dwight found its stride in the second quarter. Quarterback Collin Bachand pushed across a 1-yard touchdown run, and a successful two-point conversion run by Kayden Wood pushed Dwight ahead 8-7. Oakwood answered almost immediately when Johnson exploded through the defense for a 60-yard score to regain a 14-8 lead.

The Trojans countered just before halftime. Bachand connected with Joe Duffy on a 44-yard touchdown strike, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Trevor Jensen, sending Dwight into the break up 16-14. Bachand finished an efficient 4-for-6 through the air for 98 yards, finding Duffy three times for 57 yards.

Workhorse back Ayden Collom shouldered the load after halftime. Collom powered the Dwight rushing attack with 173 yards on 29 carries, capping a sustained drive with a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make it 22-14.

Dwight’s offense stayed on the field by converting 5 of 6 fourth-down attempts, neutralizing Oakwood’s late comeback hopes. On defense, Waylon Anderson tallied 8 total tackles (3 solo, 1 tackle for loss), while Zander Bumpous added four solo stops to keep the Comets scoreless throughout the final two frames. Oakwood quarterback Alec Wallace completed 6 of 12 passes for 58 yards, but the Trojans forced two turnovers and held firm down the stretch to lock down the victory.

The Trojan’s next opponent will be Seneca on Friday, Sept 18.
