Summer fun continues at Prairie Creek Public Library

Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight has planned several events in July to keep members of our community busy, entertained, and learning. These events are free and open to the public. However, due to limited space, registration is required. Great Homes of Chicago will be at 3 pm Sunday, July 19. The Windy City has several tourist attractions, but beyond those, historic houses offer incredible insight into American architecture, history, and culture. From a Gilded Age mansion clad in rare types of marble to a hulky stone home with connections to modern forensics, Chicago has some great homes that speaker Paul Mann will help you discover.

Doorhanger Craft will be at 10:30 am Monday, July 20. Kids can have fun decorating their craft with stickers and markers.

The Life and Art of Georgia O’Keeffe will be presented at 6 pm Monday, July 20. This lecture will cover one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, renowned for her contribution to modern art. Patrons will learn about her life, her art, and what made her art so special.

Farmer George Plants a Nation will be at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 21. The Livingston County Farm Bureau will present this program for grade schoolers and up about our first president, who was also a farmer, an engineer, an avid gardener, and an animal breeder.

Intermediate Crochet Class will be at 6 pm Tuesday, July 21. This class is for everyone who already knows the basics and would like to learn a new stitch or further their skills. Participants will need to bring their own yarn and hook. The H (5mm) hook is the recommended size.

American Mysteries Part 2 will be at 6 pm Wednesday, July 22. This part of the series will explore mysteries from the Lindbergh baby kidnapping to Bigfoot to the Tylenol poisonings.

Music Bingo will be at 6 pm Thursday, July 23. This fun night of music and prizes will have a variety of music-themed cards. Winners will get to select a prize and pick the theme for the next round.

Play-Doh Playdate will meet from 2-3 pm Friday, July 24. Children ages 2-6 are invited to develop their fine motor skills and imaginations. All materials will be provided.

Music & Motion for children ages 2-6 will meet at 2 pm Monday, July 27. This will be a time of music, dancing, and parachute play.

Shelf Indulgence Book Discussion Group will meet at 10 am Tuesday, July 28. This month, the group will be discussing “The Nature of Fragile Things” by Susan Meissner. All adults are welcome to join the discussion. A copy of the book will be available for check out at the main circulation desk.

Casino Craps will meet at 6 pm Wednesday, July 29. John Carrillo, a retired casino dealer and manager, will give a brief how-to before leading the group in play. No money is involved. It is suggested that you watch John’s introductory videos on the library’s YouTube channel before attending to get guidelines and rules ahead of time. If you do not have access to YouTube at home, our staff will gladly set up a time for you to watch it at the library.

Make-Up How-To for 5-12 grades will begin at 6 pm Thursday, July 30. Tweens and teens are invited to attend this hands-on workshop to learn how to go back to school with some great tips for using make-up.

Annette Bochenek presents Hedy Lamarr will be at 6 pm Monday, Aug. 3. Annette presented a program on “The Wizard of Oz” last year, and now she’s back to discuss Hedy Lamarr. Lamarr was not only one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but she was an inventor who developed the concepts behind technologies we use today, like Bluetooth.

Craft Night for adults and teens will meet at 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 6, to create a hanging fairy garden, perfect as an inside or outside decoration.

Euchre Tournament will begin at 6 pm Monday, Aug. 10. Join us for a fun night of cards and snacks.

Lost Chicago Department Stores will be presented by historian Leslie Goddard at 6 pm Wednesday, Aug. 12. Within thirty years of the Great Chicago Fire, the revitalized city was boasting some of America’s grandest department stores. The retail corridor on State Street was a crowded canyon of innovation and inventory where you could buy anything from a paper clip to an airplane. Revisit a time when a trip downtown meant dressing up for lunch at Marshall Field’s Walnut Room, strolling the aisles of Sears for Craftsman tools or redeeming S&H Green Stamps at Wieboldt’s. Whether your family favored The Fair, Carson Pirie Scott, Montgomery Ward, or Goldblatt’s, you were guaranteed stunning architectural design, attentive customer service and eye-popping holiday window displays. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, advertisements, catalogue images and postcards, Leslie Goddard’s narrative brings to life the Windy City’s fabulous retail past.

Every Wednesday, Toddler Time will be offered for children aged 0-4 and their caregivers. This program includes stories, crafts, and activities.

Stayin’ Fit and Active morning workouts will continue at 8 am each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The class offers chair or gentle exercises, focusing on chair yoga, core strengthening and balance.

In June and July, the library will offer Program Punch Cards to adults and teens. Patrons will receive a punch for each program attended. Every completed card with 10 punches will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card from the winner’s choice of a local business.
