Gilbert Lew Nielsen, 88, of Dwight passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 1, 1938 in Streator, the son of Kenneth and Louise Lippold Nielsen. He married Karene Marshall on September 3, 1966 in Riverdale. She survives.
Gilbert is also survived by three daughters, Kim (Dave) Doss, Amy Nielsen, and Joy (Pete) Meister; and two grandchildren, Ava and Graham Meister.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Richard Nielsen.
Gilbert earned at Master’s Degree in Business and Accounting from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He began his career as a teacher at Thornton Township High School in Harvey. He spent most of his life helping his father and uncle run the Nielsen Grain Company in Blair, retiring after 37 years in the family business.
Gilbert was very active in the community. He served on both the Dwight grade school and high school boards, as well as the village board. He was also the chairman of the Livingston County Board of Appeals and head of trustees at Dwight United Methodist Church. He built houses and duplexes, and served as a mentor and example to countless young people over the years. His hobbies included quilting and watching the Hallmark Channel.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dwight United Methodist Church or the Assembly of God Church in Dwight.
