A Tradition of Excellence: Gardner Area Band Wins Eleven Straight Competition Season

Cheers erupted and emotions ran high as the Gardner Area Band delivered another unforgettable performance this past weekend, capturing 1st Place in the Class AA Division (schools with an enrollment of 750 to 1500 students) at the prestigious Music in the Parks Concert Band Competition at Zion-Benton High School. Competing against outstanding bands from five different states, the ensemble once again demonstrated the talent, discipline, and championship-level musicianship that have made the program one of the most respected in the region.

Bands representing Wisconsin, North Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan participated in the event, making the competition both diverse and highly competitive. Despite the strong field, the Gardner Area Band rose to the occasion, showcasing the musicianship, discipline, and dedication that have become hallmarks of the program.

The band performed “The Brandenburg Gate” and “Big Circus March,” delivering a confident and energetic performance that impressed both judges and audience members alike.

This latest victory marks an extraordinary milestone for the ensemble: eleven consecutive years of winning every competition the band has entered.

The band is directed by Michael Leone, whose leadership and commitment have helped build one of the area’s most successful music programs. Under his direction, students from multiple schools continue to achieve excellence both on and off the stage.

“This group of students continues to amaze me with their work ethic, commitment, and passion for music,” said Leone. “Their dedication to early morning rehearsals and constant pursuit of excellence truly paid off at this competition. I could not be prouder of what they accomplished together.”

Leone emphasized that the students’ preparation and professionalism stood out throughout the event. “From the moment we arrived, our students carried themselves with confidence and professionalism,” he said. “They represented our schools and community with tremendous pride both onstage and offstage.”

He also praised the culture within the ensemble. “What makes this band special is the way the students support one another,” Leone added. “They push each other to improve every day and perform as one unified group. That teamwork is what makes accomplishments like this possible.”

Leone credited the continued success of the program to the support of families and the surrounding communities. “The support we receive from parents, administrators, and community members is incredible,” he said. “This achievement belongs to everyone who believes in the importance of music education and invests in these students.”

The band is now preparing for its upcoming performances and the 2026 New Orleans Band Tour, where students will have the opportunity to perform and experience one of the nation’s most historic musical cities.

With another championship performance added to its growing legacy, the Gardner Area Band continues to set the standard for musical excellence throughout the region.
