Explore techniques to take charge of chronic pain
URBANA, Ill. — Pain is one of the body’s most important warning systems, signaling when something needs care or attention. But when pain becomes persistent, it can interfere with daily routines, limit mobility, and affect emotional well-being. In the United States, chronic pain affects more than 50 million adults, making it one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. Without effective strategies, chronic pain may impact work, relationships, and overall quality of life. However, many individuals can regain control by adopting practical tools to manage their symptoms.
University of Illinois Extension is offering “Take Charge of Your Pain,” a six-week webinar series designed to help individuals better understand their symptoms and build skills to manage chronic pain. The group-based program covers medication management, nutrition, pain relief techniques, and physical activity. Participants also benefit from shared support and guidance that help strengthen confidence and promote healthier, more fulfilling daily routines.

“One of the best parts of the ‘Take Charge of Your Pain’ series is that participants stay in control,” said Robin Ridgley, family life educator. “Each week, they choose from topics such as overcoming worst-case thinking, movement, and nutrition, and turn what they learn into personalized action plans.”
The weekly webinars will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. with a built-in break. Sessions are March 5, 12, 19 and 26; and April 2 and 9.
Topics include medication management, nutrition, pain management, and physical activity. This research-based program requires full attendance and is designed for individuals aged 18 or older who live with chronic pain.
