Leonard L. “Len” Hodgman, of Joliet, age 89, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021. He is survived by his children, Michael (Meg) Hodgman of Fly Creek, NY and Tudy Hodgman of Brentwood, TN; stepdaughter, Tracy (Fran) Curry; grandchildren: Connor Magunson and Melissa Magunson; step-granddaughter, Molly Myers; and his sister, Elizabeth Peeke. Preceding him in death were his daughter, Kathleen Hodgman; father and mother, Cyrus and Zola Hodgman; and siblings, Marianne Hodgman and James Hodgman. Len was born in Joliet January 4, 1932, and was raised in Dwight, IL. He was a 1950 graduate of Dwight Township High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University in 1954. He joined the United States Army from 1954 until 1956 and was a photo interpreter. After his discharge from the Army, Len received his Master of Science in 1957 from ISU. During his career he attended University of Oklahoma, Penn State, University of Indiana, University of Minnesota, and Northern Arizona College for post-grad training. Known as “The Old Geographer,”  Len worked from 1957 to 1965 at Joliet Township High School as a teacher. He then worked at Joliet Junior College from 1966 to 1989, and at Lewis University from 1989 until his retirement in 2012 as a Professor, Advisor, Department Chairman, Trustee and Professor Emeritus. Len received the Outstand-ing Teacher Award from Joliet Junior College in 1985 and the National Council for Geo-graphic Education Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award in 1996. Visitation was held Friday, June 25, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Farkas Funeral Home, 3201 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL. Funeral services were held at 12 noon at the Funeral Home. Per Len’s wishes, cremation rites were accorded following services. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood. In accordance with the current COVID-19 guidelines, all attendees were required to wear a face mask and observe social distancing while in the funeral home.
