DWIGHT – Charles H. Pokarney of Dwight passed away Monday, March 30, 2020. Due to the shelter-in-place order private family burial will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dwight. Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation. A public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials in Charles’ name may be made to Autism Speaks, Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Morris, IL, or St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dwight. Hager Memorial Home, Dwight, is handling the arrangements. Charles was born July 20, 1934 in Pontiac, IL, a son of Michael and Myrtle (Vogel-singer) Pokarney. He married Barbara McDermott June 8, 1957 in Piper City, IL. She survives in Morris, IL. Also surviving are sons: Charles Pokarney Jr. of Dwight; John Pokarney of Bloomington, IL; daughters: Lori (Mike) McConnell of Dwight; Karen (Paul Helgesen) of Skokie, IL; Patti Trewartha of Texas; Janet (Tim) Ricketts of Braidwood, IL; sister, Mary Rice of Kalamazoo, MI; sister-in-law, Dolores Pokarney of Dwight; grandchildren: Jessica, Dan, Tyler, Jordan, Emma, Lucas, Michael and Grace; great-grandchildren: Lyllah, Harper, Jace, Jasper, Khloe, and Gracelynn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister. Charles moved to Dwight in 1965, just a few years after service in the Army from 1957 to 1959. He worked his farm until the late ’90s, when he retired. He then worked for Wal-Mart for 15 years in the produce department. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Dwight American Legion, and the Cessna 170 Association for more than 30 years. He enjoyed old cars, reading Auto and Aviation magazines, watching golf on TV, and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved spending time with his family and began every meal with dessert, pie in particular. He will be missed by all who knew him, but especially missed by his loving family.
