PONTIAC – John E. “Jack” Legner, 83, of Pontiac passed away at 1:10 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2016 at his home.
Jack was born February 9, 1933, in Sunbury, son of John J. and Bertha L. Forsythe Legner. He married Mary Helen Neville May 28, 1960 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dwight. She passed away August 24, 1988.
He is survived by his son, John “Jay” Legner of Streator and formerly of Pontiac; brother, Bernie (Barb) Legner of Pontiac; and grandchildren, Ryne Legner and Noah Legner.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; broth- ers, Merlin “Bud” Legner and Donald Legner; and sisters, Irene Thompson and Genevieve VanDyck.
Jack graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School and Pontiac Township High School, Class of 1951. After high school, Jack worked for ComEd before being activated into duty with the 44th Division U.S. National Guard for the years 1952 and 1953. After his discharge, he worked at Morton Printing Co., and 40 years later retired from RR Donnelley.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pontiac; a lifelong member of the Dwight Knights of Columbus 1282; a lifelong member of the Pontiac Elks Lodge 1019; the American Legion; and a past member of the Pontiac Moose Lodge.
He was a fan of Big Band music, golf and traveling. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan since 1945, a fan of Notre Dame football and basketball, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He enjoyed traveling the western states and visiting his sister and her family, and old and new friends in California.
Rev. David Sabel officiated at a funeral service Tuesday, 11 a.m., in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pontiac.
Burial: Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Dwight.
Visitation was Tuesday from 9 until 11 a.m. in the church.
